<itunes:summary>Episode 5 of fyi: health marcomms focuses on a very important trend facing communicators at hospitals and other health organizations -- the social media-fueled crisis. In this installment, we spotlight the story of Baby Joseph, a Canadian-born infant suffering from a rare and progressively deteriorating neurological condition. The baby's physicians at London Health Sciences Centre recommended that his breathing and feeding tubes be removed because they believed he had no hope of recovery. The parents disagreed. This ethical, medical and moral debate generated a firestorm of attention and coverage -- especially in social media.

While the ongoing debate has many facets, we have chosen to focus on the communications challenges faced by the London Health Sciences Centre, given our mission of discussing how changes in technology have impacted health marketing communications efforts around the world. As the Centre struggled to manage many competing pressures, the situation was amplified by social media, where debate and discussion raged over whether the hospital had made the correct decision. This case illustrates the difficulties any organization faces when attempting to manage a crisis in social media time.
