<itunes:summary>A few weeks ago we posted an interview podcast with Ed Bennett, advisory board member of the Mayo Clinic’s Center for Social Media and Manager of Web Operations at the University of Maryland Medical Center. Ed’s blog, Found in Cache, has become a pillar for data focusing on hospital-based social media communications.

In this podcast Ed and I continue our discussion on hospital social media focused communications and we also touch on the use of social media in smaller, local health organizations. Our conversation also focuses on an article in Health Leaders which discussed the impact of social media in the health arena featuring Ed’s perspective. In the article he stated that health marketers need to face the reality that interacting with patients over the Internet is the way of the world. Yet, the same article cited data indicating that a slim majority (53%) of health marketers feel “neutral” about the effectiveness of social media. Listen to this podcast to hear Ed’s perspective on why health marketers perceive social media in this way.

<itunes:summary>Today’s edition of fyi: health marcomms launches a new series we're producing focusing on advanced marketing and measurement techniques. Over the next several weeks we will be publishing content on our extensive wiki (located at our online community Living the Path) designed to educate health marketing communications experts on the basics regarding several advanced marketing and measurement techniques, including cross-channel marketing and attribution. (For a listing of articles in the series, please go here.) While our friends in the advertising and digital marketing space may be well aware of these techniques, those in other disciplines are perhaps less so. These articles and our podcast series are designed to help narrow the knowledge gap.

Also included is a brief mention of our recent podcast with hospital marketing expert Ed Bennett focusing on the importance of maintaining consistency when communicating via various media channels.

If you have a technique you think we should focus on, please let us know in the comments section or by calling our listener line at (866) 572-0497.

<itunes:summary>Today’s edition of fyi: health marcomms features Ed Bennett, a member of the Mayo Clinic Center for Social Media's Advisory Board and Manager of Web Operations at the University of Maryland Medical Center. He also writes the popular blog, Found in Cache. Ed began consolidating a list of hospitals using social media a few years ago. in June 2011 he published an update announcing that nearly 1,200 hospitals were using social media tools, such as YouTube and Facebook.

In this podcast, which is the first edition of a two part series, we discuss hospital social media focused communications and his perspective on why we aren’t seeing more hospitals use social media tools more aggressively.
