<itunes:summary>Editor's Note: For the first installment of this podcast series, please click here.

In today's episode of fyi: health marcomms I continue my interview with Craig Lefebvre, or @chiefmaven as he is known on Twitter. This interview marks the second and final installment of a podcast series featuring our discussion about the relationship between social media, public health and health communications. The concepts Lefebvre outlines in this podcast were originally featured in a blog post he wrote titled, "5 Fictions About Social Media for Public Health and Healthcare."

We also focus on another provocative blog post written by Lefebvre, "10 'What Ifs' for Social Marketing." In this essay he generated a list of 'what ifs,' which addresses how today's social marketers are still applying old solutions to new problems. Craig is pointing out that effective social marketing (which ultimately concludes with behavior change and persuasion) requires a much different approach.

Below is Craig's list:

What if we...

	didn't have target audiences - but co-creators
didn't have distribution systems - but places where people could play
didn't use focus groups - but designed research to fit the puzzle and people
didn't assess knowledge and attitudes - but sought insight into people's motivation and values
didn't start with analyzing people - but first assumed that it was something in their environment
didn't create messages and stories - but focused on crafting exchanges
didn't track program output - but what, how often and from where people saw and heard from us
didn't aim at target audiences - but served people
didn't focus on changing behaviors - but offered people new ways to solve problems, meet their needs and reach for their dreams
didn't focus on evaluation as the end of the process - but sustainability as the start of the next one

Do you agree with Craig's perspective? Do you have other valuable insights you'd like to share? Please call our listener line (866-572-0497) to tell us what you think and to keep the conversation going. Your comments may be featured in a future episode.

Illness, on the other hand, is the experience of being sick.
Why does this matter? Health is not simply the absence of [...]
