As health communicators, we often struggle to demonstrate the success of our campaigns and show their impact on health behavior. We are relegated to the basic ‘click’, ‘tweet’, and behavior_change‘like’ data that is readily available to us to show results – and yet that is a small measure of success and does not demonstrate health behavior change.

In order to better mine the data to determine what public health communicators can – and should – expect from their digital and social media campaigns, Westat partnered with Lotame™ to assess the performance of digital media campaigns focused on public health issues over the past year.

Lotame’s™ technology platform, Crowd Control, can identify and be used to target Influencers–consumers who share or create content–to encourage spreading the word about an issue. By leveraging this targeting ability with custom research surveys and audience data from more than 120 million unique consumers in the US, Lotame™ can provide unique solutions and insight for health campaigns.

Today’s edition of fyi: health marcomms marks a very special edition of a new series we’re producing focusing on advanced marketing and fyihealthmarcommsmeasurement techniques. In today’s installment, we begin a series of interviews with Nedra Weinreich, noted social marketing and social media expert, who works with a range of non-profits and government agencies to foster positive health behaviors and social change.  In this interview, Weinreich provides an overview of transmedia storytelling, which is defined as “a process where integral elements of a fiction get dispersed systematically across multiple delivery channels for the purpose of creating a unified and coordinated entertainment experience.”  Stay tuned for additional installments of our interview series focusing on transmedia.

This fall we’re going to be hosting our third unNiched(micro) event, which will be held at the unniched_logo_micro1CUNY Graduate Center in NYC on October 25. Part of the Path of the Blue Eye Project, unNiched(micro) is a series of breakfast events designed to provide anyone involved in communicating about health and wellness with an opportunity to learn while forging connections with others in an intimate setting.

This time around, we’re changing the format from our usual focus on having a guest speaker (or panel) educate the audience on a single topic.  Instead, we’re launching what we hope are the first of many of what we’re calling “Scratch, Sniff and Learn” unNiched(micro) events.  This event is designed to highlight innovative programs, products and campaigns in the health marketing communications arena.  Attendees will not only get to hear about these innovations from presenters, but get hands-on experience “playing” with each innovation at specially prepared exhibits during the event.
